Ingredients
- 6 ounces fresh cauliflower
- 6 ounces fresh broccoli
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 ½ tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ cups milk
- 1 teaspoon English mustard
- cayenne pepper to taste
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 (8 ounce) package shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
-
Place cauliflower and broccoli in a medium saucepan; pour in enough water to cover. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 10 minutes; drain and transfer into a medium baking dish.
-
Meanwhile, melt butter in a separate medium saucepan over low heat; stir in flour to form a thick paste. Gradually whisk in milk until mixture has thickened, about 5 minutes. Whisk in mustard, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle in 2/3 of the cheese, and stir until melted.
-
Pour sauce over broccoli and cauliflower. Bake in the preheated oven until bubbly and lightly brown, about 30 minutes. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese during the final 10 minutes of cooking.

At the heart of every dish lies a unique combination of ingredients that transform simple meals into culinary masterpieces. Whether you’re a home cook or a professional chef, understanding foods and their ingredients is key to creating memorable meals.
Fresh, high-quality ingredients make all the difference. Vegetables like tomatoes, spinach, and bell peppers add vibrant colors and essential nutrients to your dishes. Proteins such as chicken, fish, tofu, and lentils serve as the building blocks for energy-packed meals, while herbs and spices like basil, cumin, and turmeric bring depth and flavor.
Cooking also involves experimenting with textures and flavors. Combining creamy avocado with crispy toast, or pairing the sweetness of honey with tangy lemon, can elevate your dish to new heights. Don’t shy away from exploring global cuisines; ingredients like soy sauce, saffron, and coconut milk can infuse your meals with international flair.
In addition to taste, ingredients impact health. Opting for whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats ensures your meals are both delicious and nutritious. Planning balanced meals also helps maintain energy levels and promotes overall well-being.
Whether you’re crafting a simple salad or an elaborate gourmet feast, let your creativity shine. By understanding the harmony of foods and ingredients, you can turn every meal into a celebration of flavor and nutrition.
